Rathjen Cellars P + G 2016

Vancouver Island, British Columbia, CanadaRathjen nails what many island wineries miss : bright, crisp, fresh, lighter-bodied wines from island fruit. P+G is a perfect example of just that. A blend of pinot noir and gamay, hinting at that other marginal cool climate region of Burgundy, and their Passe-Tout-Grains tradition of blending the two lighter reds. This was native fermented and aged in older French oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Pouring a light red hue, this is aloft with bright cherry, herbal raspberry, perfumed plum, rasped with fine peppercorns. Acidity is brisk and crunchy and the body is comfortably lean at 12.7 degrees. Such a lovely example of island reds, and what others might aspire to.
