Rolland Galarreta Tempranillo Merlot 2015

Ribera del Duero, Castilla-Leon, SpainFrance meets Spain in the Rolland and Galarreta project, one between winemaker and consultant Michel Rolland, and Spanish wine entrepreneur Javier Galarreta. Here, Ribera del Duero tempranillo meets merlot, albeit at a low 15 percent. The fruit grows at 915 metres above sea level where the inherent cool air extends the growing season to one of the longest periods in the area. Post ferment it spends only ten months in oak before blending. I found the 2015 to be more elegant than the 2014, with dark fruits and crushed violets at its savoury core. The grapes are 35 years old, grown on skinny soils over limestone bedrock, yielding impressive, dense, silky tannins that attract. Plenty of sweet baking spices and vanilla punctuate the finish in an effective way. A treasure trove of warmth and deliciousness.
