Fattoria Selvapiana Chianti Rufina Riserva 1973
Tuscany, ItalyFrom the cellar. This Chianti Rufina is labelled as DOC because Chianti Rufina didn't achieve DOCG until 1984. Today Chianti Rufina extends across 750ha, making it the smallest appellation in Chianti. Selvapiana was established as a watch tower during the Medieval era, and during the Renaissance was expanded into an estate, used for noble Florentines and bishops. In 1827, Selvapiana was acquired by Michele Giuntini, and was operated by the family until 1997. Pouring a bricking brown orange hue, alluring fine brown spices, leather, blood, wild mushroom tea and waves of Worcestershire filter throughout this 45 year old wine, one based around a light miso paste palate. The medium bodied wine is seasoned by dried herbs, rock salts and tobacco, and hugged by sticky tannins to the finish. Very savoury, for current consumption and benefitting from airtime, though still very much enjoyable at present for aged wine aficionados. This vintage is currently available for purchase in Ontario.Tasted: 06 October 2018Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:ON | $219.95 | 750ml | private order |
