Olifants River, South AfricaThis is a very pleasant sémillon, big on perfume and that waxy/oily sheen that can add weight to the back end. In this case, there is a balancing factor of citrus and minerality that helps to lengthen the palate and give a more linear profile. This is from the estate farm of Henk Laing in WO Citrusdalberg. The fruit is dry-farmed, growing on 50+ year old bush vines. The ferment is in stainless before a six month sleep in neutral, large format French oak. The result is a stylish, authentic sémillon with peachy fruit, nectarine skin flecked with tropical notes of pineapple and guava. It seems bigger than it is with only 13.5 degrees of alcohol. This is a wonderful wine for east coast lobster or west coast Dungeness crab. It will age a decade effortlessly.Tasted: 01 November 2018Tasted by: Prices:

Olifants River, South AfricaThis carries all of semillon's waxy heft and sheen, but with a stony, citrus-lined, edgy profile that talks of its place. This is from Henk Laing's farm, Trekpoort, on Skurfberg Mountain, withinin the Citrusdal Mountains (WO Citrusdalberg). These are now 50+ year old bush vines, almost 1m tall, planted on red sand and clay in in between rooibos, fynbos and apricot trees. After whole bunch pressing, this fermented in stainless before six months in neutral, large format French oak. Vibrant stone fruit - nectarine, peach, apricot peel - is scented with tropical melon, pineapple, guava, all wrapped around a waxen, expansive core, and framed with gentle wood spicing. Structural and generous, but held to a 13.5 degree declaration, this young wine well suits protein pairings now, or a couple years' rest in the cellar.Tasted: 25 October 2018Tasted by: Prices:
