Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinha do Rio 2014

Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, PortugalCristiano van Zeller divides his vineyards into parcels, and Vinha do Rio (the river vineyard) is their oldest, at over 100 years old and made up of a field blend of 29 varieties (49 percent of which was tinta barroca). Resting at lower altitude, near the river Torto, this was foot trodden and fermented in lagares before being racked into new French oak casks. Fine earthy, savoury dried cassis, dried blueberry and dark cherries is lifted with highly perfumed violets, fleshy plum and a driving bead of acidity. Lovely red fruit, scrubby herbs weave throughout the juicy palate, framed by strident, yielding tannins, to a peppery finish. Drinking well now with a decant, this is really meant to cellar for at least five years, and upwards from there.Tasted: 06 February 2017Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
