Millton Clos de Ste. Anne Chardonnay 2013

Gisborne - Poverty Bay, North Island, New ZealandJames and Annie Milton are not just leaders in biodynamics in New Zealand, but worldwide. The first in the southern hemisphere to be certified biodynamic by Demeter in 2009, they have remained in tune and focused on their now 30 ha, spread between four vineyards in Manutuke and Matawhero. Clos de Ste. Anne is a single vineyard on steep northeast facing slopes in the foothills of Poverty Bay. This chardonnay is from dry farmed older vines on loam with volcanic ash and pumice over calcareous sedimentary rock. Wild ferment, this spent ten months on the lees (without sulphur) before being bottled unfined. Finessed and textural, with pear skin, white peach, green apple brightness and yellow apple warmth on a very fluid and streamline palate. Slightly grippy texture frames the edges, while creamy lees, nutty brioche bases the cushioned palate. Subtle shimmering acidity throughout, this merges lightness of being and of concentration. Showing beautifully now, but with the interest and depth to cellar for the next decade.Tasted: 23 January 2017Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
