Paul Mas Grenache Noir 2015
Sud de France, FranceAt this price point you want a juicy, fresh, red-fruited grenache with medium alcohol (it’s 13.5 percent). You get all that and more in this Pays d’Oc varietal red made by Domaines Paul Mas. Mas operates via estates and appellations even at the entry level, and it works to keep yields in line, in this case well under 60hl/ha. Look for plenty of fresh, ripe strawberries with flecks of dark fruit and a smooth juicy mid-palate and finish. Tannins are dusty with more mineral, savoury, raspberry flavours. A dependable, accessible, good value red for grilled chicken thighs, or poultry burgers. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and concrete vats and 80 percent of the juice is aged in American oak barrels; 20 percent in French oak. The Paul Mas range of varietal wines is mostly produced from vineyards on the Nicole Estate in Montagnac, near Pézenas in the rolling hills of the Hérault Valley - mere kilometres from the Mediterranean coast. Look for Vinus the heron on all the labels from Domaines Paul Mas. As the tale goes it was often seen in the Mas vineyards, preferring the ripe grapes to the fish from the river.Tasted: 12 December 2016Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Treve RingPrices:BC | $11.49 | 750ml | BCLS |
