Montsant, Catalunya (Catalonia Cataluña), SpainMonsant is a stone’s throw (or is that a piece of llicorella) from nearby and highly heralded Priorat region. The mix is carignan and garnacha planted at a dizzying 530 meters above sea-level. Expect a rich, round, sunbaked red full of black cherries, intense wild blackberries and tempered by a plummy licorice finish. The tannins remain youthful and gritty calling for grilled sausages or venison. We love the value here and you can age this wine too. A BCLDB exclusive means it's everywhere and cheap – the monopoly has its privileges.Tasted: 30 August 2017Tasted by: Prices:
Montsant, Catalunya (Catalonia Cataluña), SpainFrom the neighbouring region that rings regal Priorat comes this smokey and modest Montsant. Carignan and garnacha pick up potentcy from the powerful llicorella and còdois soils, as well as the hot and wild terroir (and altitude; this is from 530m). Five months in oak further plumps the sun-ripened black fruit, supporting dusky black cherry, wild blackberry, floral dark plum, bitter chocolate and resinous anise. Tannins are gritty and slightly sticky, to the snappy finish. A great value from a challenging region, and ideal for steak frites or lamb sausages.Tasted: 13 December 2016Tasted by: Prices:
