Concha y Toro Marqués de Casa Concha Chardonnay 2014
Valle del Limari, ChileWinemaker Marcelo Papa is tweaking the “Marques” range, slowly taking them out of the predictable, super-ripe, extracted, too much new oak style to a juicy, fresh, more ‘naked’ style that better represents the grape and the land. It’s a brave move for a highly conservative wine company and country but it's exactly where the Marques range must go. The Quebrada Seca Vineyard, resides inside the D.O. Limarí, in the Limarí Valley, approximately 190 metres above sea level, just 19 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean along the north bank of the Limarí River. Clay soils, rich in calcium carbonate supercharge the fruit here, excelling on the palate with salty, mineral undertones. Only 5% of the wine goes through the acid-flattening malolactic fermentation and it spends only 11 months in 225 and 600 litre oak barrels. Rich yet elegant, the vibrant pear fruit reflects picking dates that are as much as three weeks ahead of historical dates. Food friendly and easily one of the best $20 chardonnays in the world.Tasted: 17 October 2016Tasted by: Prices:BC | $18.99 | 750ml | BCLS |
