Cambria Barbara's Clone 667 Pinot Noir 2011
Santa Maria Valley, Santa Barbara County, Central Coast, California, United StatesThe Santa Maria Valley benchland was once known as “tepuztli,” a native term meaning copper coin. At some point the Spanish settlers in the region translated the word as Tepusquet which was the original vineyard name when Kendall Jackson CEO Barbara Banke bought a large part of the original Tepusquet Vineyard (planted between 1970 and 1971) in 1986. The vineyard has been expanded and replanted to new clones and rootstocks over the last two decades. A cool, wet spring marked inconsistent weather patterns that prevailed throughout the summer, leaving small clusters and berries full of flavour yet fresh with bright acidty. Clone 667, as the label notes, is Cambria proprietor Barbara Banke’s favourite. We love the smoky, earthy undercurrent that sets the stage for persistent blueberry and black cherry flavours. Long, spicy and silky, it is a delight to drink. The wine is fermented in open top new French oak barrels, pressed off and returned to the same barrels for 16 months.Tasted: 31 August 2016Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $38.00 | 750ml | private wine shops |
