Hartford Court Pinot Noir 2013
Russian River, Sonoma County, California, United StatesThe 2013 Hartford Court pinot is made with a blend of small vineyards located throughout the Russian River Valley AVA and supplemented by the winery block located off of Martinelli Road and Fog Dance Vineyard in Green Valley, Russian River Valley. It's all hand sorted and destemmed but not crushed, sorted again at the berry level before its fermented in small open-top, temperature controlled stainless steel fermenters using indigenous yeasts. Domaine Drouhin Laurène 2012
Willamette Valley, Oregon, United StatesClassic Dundee, with pretty, perfumed red fruit. Wild yeast and lower yields, plus the know-how of the Burgundian Veronique Drouhin results in a finessed, graceful pinot of dark cherry and raspberry, with sueded, soft tannins. Willamette's 2012 ripeness blended with Drouhin's Burgundian's tradition. It's all estate, handpicked, fermented on its own yeast, in French oak and never more than 20 percent is new. Only the best barrels make the Lauren blend and they are usually the ones she thinks best express the property. Robert Mondavi Chardonnay Reserve 2013
Carneros, Napa Valley, California, United StatesThey are calling 2013 an 'epic' year in Napa leading to an early harvest and perfect fruit. Look for a polished and sophisticated nose of full cream, fragrant sandalwood, roasted pear and custard. On the palate this Carneros chardonnay displays fine cloves, lemon curd and a fresh red apple acidity that keeps it linear and long. Ripe and rich, pour this concentrated chardonnay now with lobster or crab dishes, or let it rest in your cellar three to five years. An impressive effort and one for collectors. The fruit is whole- cluster pressed before the wine goes through a long, slow, cool native-yeast fermentation in 100 percent Burgundian-style barrels of which 61 percent are new. Battonage was done twice a week adding a quiet creaminess. After blending the wine spends thirteen months on its lees in neutral barrels. Good value.Prices:BC | $46.99 | 750ml |

La Jota Vineyard Co. Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
Howell Mountain, Napa Valley, California, United StatesWinemaker Christopher Carpenter makes this 77/11/8/4/blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, petit verdot and merlot grown on Howell Mountain at La Jota Vineyard and W.S. Keyes Vineyard. The wine is aged 20 months in 89% new French oak to take on the rich brawny mountain fruit. A perfect vintage lead to exceptional fruit all hand-harvested and slid into small 30-pound boxes. The fruit is then hand sorted destemmed and lightly crushed before a cold soak. Carpenter likes to oxygenate the must two or three times a day during the primary ferment in stainless steel to wrestle the ‘mountain’ tannins down to size. In-barrel malolactic fermentation pulls it all together along with three separate rackings over the 20 months it rests in barrel. The textures are surprisingly soft (a result of the vineyard selection). Look for rich berry aromas and flavors accented by notes flecked with licorice and bittersweet chocolate. The palate is awash in cassis and boysenberry fruit sitting over a dense thick soft layer of tannin. Perfect acidity keeps it fresh and long in the mouth… with decades to go before it sleeps. Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon Puente Alto Vineyard 2011
Puente Alto, Valle del Maipo, Region del Valle Central, ChileDon Melchor has long been a highly respected Chilean cabernet sauvignon from the Puente Alto vineyard in Maipo. Elegance is not a word you throw around too much in Chile but Don Melchor has it developed into much more elegant wine over time thanks to far better tannin management. Truchard Cabernet Sauvignon Carneros 2012
Carneros, Napa Valley, California, United StatesThe key word on the label is ‘Carneros,’ Napa Valley, home to 400 relatively cool acres air-conditioned by the San Pablo Bay. This cabernet is planted to steep south, southwestern facing hillsides, in essence, the warmest of the cool sites. The vineyards are mix of ages from 16 to 38-years old and the mix contains bits of cabernet franc (11), petit verdot (1), and malbec (1). Look for a spicy, almost peppery mix of cool red and black fruit flavours. The palate is similar with spicy, cool cedar, vanilla, anise, balsamic notes and a fresh finish. Tannins are a bit on the sticky, powdery style, though a wine like this always well suited to proteins to fill out any gaps. A cool style Napa cabernet more reminiscent of the Okanagan than Napa Valley. Best now with grilled meats or let this age for six to eight years.Prices:BC | $30.00 | 750ml |

Pewsey Vale Single Vineyard Estate Riesling 2014
Eden Valley, South Australia, AustraliaEnglishman Joseph Gilbert planted the Pewsey Vale vineyard in 1847 but it wasn’t until 1961 Geoff Angas-Parsons and Wyndham Hill Smith fully develop the historic vineyard site into the contoured Pewsey Vale Vineyard - a single vineyard dedicated to the single variety – riesling. A windy spring led to an uneven set before a late frost conspired to reduce the crop. This single vineyard riesling is sourced from wind whipped fruit grown at 540 metres. Bone dry, with tight, lime pith acidity and a fist of stones, this youthful riesling is waiting for the future to stretch its legs. Mai and Kenji Hodgson Faia Vin Blanc 2014

Kenji and his partner Mai followed their love of wine to the Loire, settling in the village of Rablay-sur-Layon and making small lots of sustainably grown, natural wines. Faia is chenin blanc from shale soils, whole cluster pressed and then transferred directly to barrel for a slow, long (6-8 months) fermentation, on lees. Crystalline acidity hallmarks this linear, lean white, lingering with a pinpricking minerality long after the last sip. Tight green apple, white honey, delicate white florals, savoury broken stone, mandarin pith and bitter herbs glide on the palate's lightly leesy chenin sheen through to the lengthy finish, where a textured riff of green apple skin and minerality carries this out. Fielding Estate Winery Riesling 2013
Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, CanadaFrom multiple vineyards across the Niagara Peninsula (and a kid sibling to the Estate Riesling) comes this off-dry, pure-fruited riesling, the crisp, zingy fruit preserved by cool fermentation in stainless steel where it was kept with light lees until bottling. High acidity gobbles up the 26 g/l residual sugar, leaving ripe, sweet pear, zesty pink grapefruit, lime marmalade, fragrant white peach and a swell of mouth-watering acidity on the finish. An echo of eraser and river stone grounds this value find. At 10.5 percent alcohol, it's hard not to gulp this, especially when chilled and a patio is calling.Prices:ON | $15.95 | 750ml |

Tantalus Old Vines Riesling 2013
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis remains one of BC's cult rieslings year in and out, with heady local and international acclaim (including Jancis Robinson). The Old Vines Riesling is from 1978 estate heritage blocks, farmed sustainably and cropped low, able to take the challenges of the 2013 vintage in stride. Lime pith, green apple and subtle eraser aromas concentrate on the focused palate, one driven by taut acidity and layered with potent lemongrass, wild herbs, citrus pith and river stone minerality. A chalky grip gives savoury structure, while ringing and juicy high acidity brings joy. White grapefruit lingers on the lengthy, dry finish. Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaFrom the famed Cerqueira Vineyard in the southern Okanagan, this wild ferment, unfined and unfiltered merlot carries the earthy warmth of the desert sun through pure, herb-textured black cherry and black plum. Earthy bramble and wild sage are woven throughout this medium bodied merlot, lifted with a swell of acidity and hemmed in with grippy and ripe tannins, finishing with a dusty dark cocoa note. Thirty percent whole berry and vertical basket press to thin staved neutral French tip this in your favour. Chateau Changyu Castel Cabernet Gernischt 2005
Shandong, ChinaThe nose reminds me of Okanagan cabernet form the early 1990s, cassis, bell pepper and roasted tomato notes dominate. The palate is identical with some searing acidity despite the age of this wine. Cabernet Gernischt is a varietal with pre-phylloxera origins in Bordeaux said to be genetically identical to carmenère. Its aged in French oak for a year with eight more years in bottle before release. I’m guessing it pairs well with bigger Chinese dishes like duck that can tame the acidity and green notes. Presumably much has improved in the last decade at the vineyard and winery.Prices:BC | $16.77 | 750ml |

Antinori Tignanello 2005
Tuscany, ItalyThe original Super-Tuscan, Tignanello is produced exclusively from the Tignanello vineyard, a 47 hectares (116 acres) southwest-facing vineyard that sits over calcareous rocky-marl and limestone with some tufaceous elements (a soft porous rock consisting of calcium carbonate deposited from springs rich in lime). The vineyard slope sits between 1,150 and 1,312 feet above sea level. The 2005 is just hitting its stride. The nose is fully developed with fine aromatics. Smoky red fruits and that stony mineral notes rings throughout the wine along with power and precision and a touch of spice. It is fair to say it’s a pretty wine a decade down the road versus a powerhouse Super Tuscan and that is a good thing. Tasted in a 2016 at a Tignanello vertical. Tignanello was the first sangiovese to be aged in small oak barrels, the first red wine in modern times to use a non-traditional grape variety, Cabernet, in the blend, and was among the first red wines made in Chianti with no white grapes. Originally Tignanello was a Chianti Classico Riserva labeled Vigneto Tignanello. It was first made as a single vineyard wine in the 1970 vintage, when it contained 20% Canaiolo and 5% Trebbiano and Malvasia. In 1971 vintage the wine became a Vino da Tavola della Toscana and was named Tignanello after the vineyard from which it originates. That’s when Tignanello stopped adhering to the rules laid down by Chianti Classico Disciplinare, and with the 1975 vintage, white grapes were totally eliminated. Since the 1982 vintage, the blend has been 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard slope sits between 1,150 and 1,312 feet above sea level. Antinori has done a fine job in what was a bit cooler year and a wine that has held up very well given the super warm vintage and its age. Altitude matters and this 85/10/5 sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc is still alive. The nose is now mature with smoky, meaty, peppery notes dominating. The attack is a mix of balsamic cherry fruit flecked with mature tobacco, black cherry, menthol, cassis and a touch of leather. Fully ready to drink. Best now with subtle meat dishes or pastas. Tuscany, ItalyEarly rains set up the 2012 vintage to handle the inevitable warm dry weather that mark the summer. Another splash or rain in late August brought the vineyard back to life and up a great fall finish. Structure with finesse is what the new Tignanello is all about. This is a blend of 80 percent sangiovese, with the remainder made up of cabernet sauvignon and merlot. After up to 28 days fermentation, the wines were transferred into concrete vats, where the best were selected for maturation in Slovenian large format wood barrels for one year, and then transferred into small barriques for one additional year. Ripe black cherry, supple leather and anise continue onto the full bodied palate, where sweet tobacco, ripe plum and cinnamon bark come into play.
