Escaleras de Empedrado Pinot Noir 2012

Talca, Valle del Claro, Valle del Maule, Region del Valle Central, ChileThe vines here are very close to the coast and on top of the hills on a steep, cool terrace. Good cherry colour with savoury herb, peppery, tobacco, plum, mint, vanilla, light cedar, vanilla and raspberry aromas. Full, ripe, juicy, elegant, fresh and suave palate. Menthol, black cherry, plum, spicy, licorice, vanilla, tobacco, earthy, peppery, rose petal flavours with light tannins on the finish. Good fruit and concentration with some light tannins to dissipate. A polished ‘Euro’ style with good complexity. Fine first release. Escaleras planted at 370 metres above the Pacific Ocean in coastal Maule some 26 kilometres from the sea and some 180km south of Curicó the home of Torres Chile. The wine and the sub-appellation are called Empedrado or stony like the slate soils in the region. It’s a US$4 million project that included grenache plantings that never made it. The pinot noir was planted in 2007 and the first fruit was subsequently ravaged by birds before nets were installed. The first release of Escaleras de Empedrado was aged seven months in second-fill French oak barriques followed by two years ageing in bottle.Tasted: 15 December 2015Tasted by: Prices:
