A portion of the pinot noir juice gets several days of contact with the skins to extract colour and flavour, and a small amount of still pinot is added to the blend. There is a surprising amount of acidity to keep this wine fresh, but on the palate, it is all strawberries and caramel with some pomegranate and spice. This is an attractive pre-dinner sipper. Earthy raspberry, strawberry, is laced with tight red currants, and lit with a fine cranberry acidity, offsetting the creamy palate. Raspberry, fresh herbs, cream lead the round, soft palate, with ample spices and an equally ample dosage to make this super accessible. Pompadour hails from California's Carneros region, just north of the San Pablo Bay. The cuvée is 72/28 pinot noir/chardonnay, where a portion of the pinot noir is allowed several days of skin contact to pull additional fruit character and colour. Expect an intriguing mature, salty, strawberry/cherry attack with light nuances of peaches, honeysuckle and spice. A creamy mineral texture carries through a dry, food-friendly finish.
