Masi Grandarella Appassimento 1999

Verona, Veneto, ItalyWe struggled to extricate the cork from the bottle and it crumbled as we pulled it out. Look for a black cherry raspberry licorice nose with sweaty leather and warm cooked fruit undercurrents. Very smooth on the palate and warm on entry showing elevated alcohol and vanilla coffee mocha flavours. Masi thinks of this as a super Venetian. The blend is an unusual refosco/corvina/carmenère. Definitely for fans of Amarone. The production method for Grandarella is based on the technique of partially drying the grapes prior to fermentation. Each variety is picked separately, and slightly later than normal and fermented separately prior to the final blending of the individual wines.Tasted: 09 March 2003Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
