Chateau Changyu Castel Cabernet Gernischt 2005
Shandong, ChinaThe nose reminds me of Okanagan cabernet form the early 1990s, cassis, bell pepper and roasted tomato notes dominate. The palate is identical with some searing acidity despite the age of this wine. Cabernet Gernischt is a varietal with pre-phylloxera origins in Bordeaux said to be genetically identical to carmenère. Its aged in French oak for a year with eight more years in bottle before release. I’m guessing it pairs well with bigger Chinese dishes like duck that can tame the acidity and green notes. Presumably much has improved in the last decade at the vineyard and winery.Tasted: 10 March 2016Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $16.77 | 750ml | BCLS |
