Cave de Tain Vin de Paille Hermitage 1995
Hermitage, Northern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceAt Cave de Tain, Vin de Paille or straw wine is produced from old, some over one-hundred years, Hermitage white grapes and only in the finest years. Small, healthy, overripe bunches are handpicked. It takes 2 kilos of grapes to produce a 50cl bottle of Vin de Paille. Very amber colour with a green edge and a rancio, nutty, raisined nose with a touch of volatility mixed with walnuts and toffee. Ripe, rich, juicy, sweet but well balanced palate with good intensity. Toffee, walnut, raisin, peppery, spicy, smoky, citrus peel, cigar and pepper flavours. Very good intensity and length with a lingering, slightly tannic finish. Flavours are much more promising than the nose suggests. Very akin to a sweeter style 20 year old tawny. The ferment is long and slow, in total it remains about two years in barrels before bottling. Final alcohol is about 16% with 100 grams of residual sugar per liter.Tasted: 30 September 2015Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $150.00 | 750ml | estimated retail |
