Napa Valley, California, United StatesAt first whiff there is a brambled bent to the nose, with green and red raspberry fruit, light toast and high tones. Red cherry and leather dominate the juicy and mouth filling palate, alongside generous strawberry and raspberry fruit. Ripe, cushy tannins are well integrated and succulent. An interested perfumed carnation character washes over the jammy finish. The wine presents young and somewhat awkward now, but doubtlessly will outgrow its gangliness and emerge a swan over the next 5+ years. Napa Valley, California, United StatesSimilar to last year’s tasting this wine wowed me with its ability to straddle the New and Old World. The 2010 vintage was unique with unseasonably cold days, untimely rain fall and several heat spikes. Yet somehow Opus managed to overcome all of it. Again complexity and finesse ooze from what is a very cool/floral/mineral nose with bright red fruit flavours underneath. The palate is suave and dense, the tannins fine-grained tannins and along smooth balanced finish. The blend is 84/5.5/5.5/4/1 cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot and malbec.
