Chalk Hill Estate Chardonnay 2010
Sonoma County, California, United StatesChalk Hill is naturally fermented with native yeast and goes through 100% malolactic fermentation and weekly battonage for eleven months in French oak where some 40 per cent is new. A cool, wet spring and rain at flowering reduced the crop load that turned out to be useful in what was overall a cool year. The style is very California, but in a delicious manner with creamy rich honeyed, tropical, pear fruit flavours with a thread of minerality and coolness on the back end. If this wine ever gets leaned (beginning with less malo) there is no telling where it could go. Best with crab or buttery fish dishes.Prices:BC | $60.00 | 750ml |

LinCourt Vineyards Lindsey's Pinot Noir 2011
Santa Barbara County, Central Coast, California, United StatesOnce a second label in the Foley Family hierarchy Lincourt is all grown as evidenced by Lindsay's Pinot Noir, a 100% Sta. Rita Hills based wine. The property is planted to individual micro-blocks set out by soils, exposure and elevation and in 2011, another cool vintage with no late summer heat spikes the result are terrific. After a cold soak and primary ferment the wine is aged for 19 months in 100% French oak barrels, 40% of which were new. This nose is particularly aromatic mixing cedar and strawberries with red cherries and dried herbs. The palate is smooth and succulent with juicy cherry fruit flavours with a pinch of barnyard and dried herbs. Pork or salmon would be a fine accompaniment. Super value.Prices:BC | $35.00 | 750ml |

Sebastiani Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2010
Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, California, United StatesThe Alexander cab is an 88/6.5/5/5 mix of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot and looks to be an upgrade over previous releases. Most of the fruit comes of old vines using clones 337 and 7 from winemaker Mark Lyon's vineyard. This is a much richer more blockbuster style than the Sonoma County cab with plenty of black fruit aromas and flavours with the telltale chocolate notes of the Alexander Valley. The finish is long and balance with just a hint of stony minerality. Steak anyone?Prices:BC | $40.00 | 750ml |

Sebastiani Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Sonoma County, California, United StatesThe base vines date back to 1961 although today the mix includes fruit from Sonoma Valley, Chalk Hill and the Alexander Valley. The 2010 mix is 82 cabernet sauvignon with 9 percent merlot and small amounts of petit verdot and other mixed reds. A cool year extended harvest into November but with no rain as in 2009. Some 15 months in American oak adds toasted, dried herbs spice and vanilla notes to a delicious drinking round soft, juicy cabernet you can drink now.Prices:BC | $23.00 | 750ml |

Township 7 Sauvignon Blanc 2012
Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe austerity in the 2011 is not in this tasty 2012 but we still hate the synthetic closure. Nevertheless, look for bright passion fruit, floral, fresh pear aromas that pull you into the glass. On the palate the flavours are lean-ish but tropical with notes of lemon and passion fruit. Simply prepared fresh mussels or clams would be a great match. Well done, good value.Prices:BC | $19.00 | 750ml |

Vins de Pedra La Musa 2011
Conca de Barbera, Catalunya (Catalonia Cataluña), SpainVins de Pedra is the family winery winemaker Marta Pedra, oenologist at La Vinyeta (Empordà). La Musa is a red blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and syrah but the underlying force in these wines is a stony minerality. Red fruits with balsamic notes mark its smooth palate with substantial tannins yet all in balance. Elegant, stylish red this equally age worthy. La Vinyeta Puntiapart 2011
Alt Emporda, Empordà, Ampurdain-Costa Brava, Catalunya (Catalonia Cataluña), SpainPuntiapart 11 is the big boy red at La Vinyeta led by its 85/15 of powerful cabernet sauvignon and samsó that spends 13 months in in new French, Hungarian and Romanian oak casks. This wine takes its name from Punt i Apart (a new paragraph), it is the end of a cycle. It contains fruit from some of the oldest vines at Mollet de Peralada in Empordà. The cabernet is 30-years old the samsó has been in the ground 100 years. There is terrific elegance here despite the 14.5 per cent alcohol. Rich warm mouth-filling but the fruit is both balanced and nuance, Coffee and chocolate spike the flavours of this medium to dark red fruit flavoured wine with fine-grained, well managed tannins. Puntiapart spends 13 months in new French, Hungarian and Romanian oak. Lamb and beef would work well now but you should probably lay this away for another five years.Prices:Spain | $12.00 | 750ml |

La Vinyeta Llavors 2012
Alt Emporda, Empordà, Ampurdain-Costa Brava, Catalunya (Catalonia Cataluña), SpainLlavors, no not flavors, is the continuation of the story at La Vinyeta and in this case meaning ... and then. The blend is a mix of mostly samsó and merlot with a bit of fortification from cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Following the theme it is all handpicked from 50-year old vineyards but this time with five months ageing in new French, Hungarian and Romanian oak. Love the nose again a mix of red and dark fruits with plenty of floral/violet notes bits of coffee and liquorice. An aromatic expression of a Bordelais style with a smoky spicy back end. It was a perfect match with a substantial local cheese and charcuterie plate served after the tasting.Prices:Spain | $8.00 | 750ml |

Alt Emporda, Empordà, Ampurdain-Costa Brava, Catalunya (Catalonia Cataluña), SpainThe Heus Negre mixes syrah, garnatxa negre, merlot and samsó, the first two variety averaging nearly 60 years of age. The local and international grapes are all handpicked and fermented in tank. Look for a Juicy, fresh, aromatic, modern red with black cherry and floral notes on the nose. The attack is round with meaty, spicy black fruit notes and a warm soft finish. Certainly good value for middleweight, mid-week dishes. The Empordà-based bodega's name is a play on the Catalan words for vineyard and comic strip. La Vinyeta Heus Blanc 2012
Alt Emporda, Empordà, Ampurdain-Costa Brava, Catalunya (Catalonia Cataluña), SpainTo clever by a half is how I would describe the wines of La Vinyeta. The Empordà-based bodega's name is a play on the Catalan words for vineyard and comic strip. The wines are the chapters, and in this case the Heus series, come from the expression Heus aquí una vegada meaning once upon a time. The blend alone excites me: a 47/31/12/6/4/ mix of macabeu, xarel.lo, garnatxa blanca, moscat and malvasia. The macabeu is some sixty years old and the terraced soils are awash in schist and quartz. Can you spell m-i-n-e-r-a-l. Love the fresh attack of this wine, its electricity and floral components and the citrus undercurrents. Very food friendly. L'Orni is a remarkable chardonnay made with 15-year old vines, planted at 350 metres above sea level. The calcareous soils are the perfect foil for this sophisticated white with its stony, peachy aromas flavours with bits of honey and brioche. Six month of battonage add a texture and depth to the wine that surprises. The finish is persistent with exotic flecks of orange peel. A well-made chardonnay that would disappear in nay global tasting of fine bottles. The winery suggest beans and pulses, grilled white fish or spicy fish stews. Painted Rock Syrah 2011
Skaha Bench, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaPainted Rock has excited us with its Skaha bench syrah that reflects more of the meaty, peppery cooler aspects of the northern Rhone with the understanding it comes from the Okanagan Valley. Smoky meaty leather black cherry aromas mark the nose along with a dollop of wilderness. On the palate, it begins with a juicy note inviting you into the glass to discover its complex core of black and blueberry fruits, liquorice and tea, underscored by sage, vanilla and more smoky, meaty notes. Just a baby this will need five years in bottle to express its full spectrum of flavours and length. The oak is better managed and its makes a difference in what is an average vintage at best. Impressive intensity and length no doubt as a result of four months of lees ageing after the fermentation. Surprisingly good for 33,000 cases.Prices:AB | $25.00 | 750ml |

The Doctor's Sauvignon Blanc 2012
Marlborough, South Island, New ZealandIn 2012, Kiwi Dr. John Forrest who nailed the concept of a low alcohol with this tasty little sauvignon bottled at 9.5 percent has dried the wine out completely, pushing it pack into Kiwi gooseberry/passion fruit mode. Fairly stark and youthful at this point but would be fine with most of your lunchtime menu. A touch of residual sugar wouldn't hurt this style.Prices:BC | $20.00 | 750ml |

La Clape, Coteaux du Languedoc, Languedoc, Sud de France, FranceMourvèdre, syrah and grenache, 80/10/10 at low yields reveal a surprisingly soft and plush style rosé. The mourvèdre is directly pressed the syrah and grenache are bled out and it is all stirred on the fine lees in concrete vats for three months.
