Sonoma Valley, Sonoma County, California, United StatesA wonderful discovery and a sure sign to me that away from the varietal brands that dominate Canadian wine shelves there is still a California wine industry with substance and depth and more important hope for the future. The Compagni Portis come from a field blend of almost 60-year-old, dry-farmed vines. Fresh aromatic bright and much more the blend is as odd as its old with mostly gewürztraminer and Trousseau gris along with riesling, berger, green Hungarian and as the owners say 'whatever else is out there.' I was struck by the freshness and stony citrus threads that lifted this wine out of the glass.
