Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, PortugalWhite Port is a style that just about stands on its own in the world of wine: a sweet fortified white wine that’s both oxidative (in this case, from aging three years in oak vats) and gently aromatic from an array of indigenous grape varieties. There’s also variation in style between port houses, with Taylor Fladgate’s Fine White Port a little sweeter than some. As you’d expect from the winemaking, it’s wildly complex: golden raisins, apricot, baked apple, walnut, white flowers, and the list goes on. Full-bodied and slightly astringent, this is best enjoyed well chilled to dull the alcohol. Although niche in North America, that’s certainly not true in Portugal, where White Port is often blended with tonic water to make a thirst-quenching cocktail. It’s next to impossible to only have one.Tasted: 18 June 2020Tasted by: Prices:

Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, PortugalWhite Port is sorely undervalued in North America but not because it doesn't taste delicious. Taylor's 'Fine White' is a mix of varieties including arinto, boal, codega, esgana cão, folgasão, gouveio, viosinho and rabigato that are all aged separately for some 36 months in oak vats. Taylor's pioneered dry white aperitif port more than 60 years ago under the Chip Dry label, first blended in 1934 but the 'The Special White Port' is a much sweeter version. Expect a very fresh attack with floral, anise, caramel and vanilla flecks. You can enjoy this neat in a tumbler or a wine glass or served over ice with a slice of lemon. The latter is a welcomed pre-dinner treat.Tasted: 16 November 2013Tasted by: Prices:

Douro Valley, Northern Portugal, PortugalThe 'Fine White Port' is a mix of white grapes grown mainly on the Upper slopes of the Douro Valley; varieties include arinto, boal, codega, esgana cão, folgasão, gouveio, viosinho and rabigato. Each variety is aged solo in oak vats for about three years. Taylor's pioneered dry white aperitif port more than 60 years ago under the Chip Dry label, first blended in 1934 but the 'The Special White Port' is a much sweeter version. Look for a fresh floral anise with bits of vanilla and caramel throughout. I like it served over ice with a slice of lemon, especially on a hot day.Tasted: 05 September 2011Tasted by: Prices:
