As a ruby reserve style, it's not vintage dated, but the current incarnation of this wine is quite impressive (lot number LA20146). It's inky purple in colour with great intensity on the nose, combining lush, concentrated black fruits and an attractive floral lift that keeps things fresh. It's a wine that's meant to be both youthful and ready to drink on release, but there's still a tannic backbone here. It was a project instigated and overseen by David Guimaraens, chief winemaker, and released in 2006. The grapes come from their Quinta do Panascal, organically farmed since 1992. This is a Reserve Ruby, with at least three years' aging in large barrels prior to filtering, bottling, and release. Because these are filtered, they do not improve with bottle age, so consider this ready to crack upon purchase. Very forward and sweet, with sugarplums, blackberry pie, baked raisins, and dark caramel, all around a fiery, spirited core. After that I was thinking certified organic might be fun and that led me to revisit the Fonseca Terra Prima, organic right down to the spirit used in its fortification. The style is drier and firmer than most ruby ports, bringing some welcome complexity in the glass. The attack is still sweet, mixing molasses, caramel, sweet cassis jam, pepper and pipe tobacco. The nose is a mix of spice, cedar and menthol with hints of ash and black liquorice. The style and attack are dry on the palate with fairly fiery, spirity notes and rich raisiny, menthol, dried fig, blackcurrant, smoky black tea flavours.
