Frescobaldi Giramonte 2008

Tuscany, ItalyThe Giramonte vineyard is at Tenuta di Castiglioni in the commune of Montespertoli about half hour drive outside the walls of Florence. A mix of clay and sand it's a perfect site for merlot that is closing in 20 years in the ground at 250 metres above sea level. Look for a rich nose of vanilla, cedar, smoky cherry jam and plums flecked with orange peel, anise, and peppery, dried herbs and earthy aromas. The attack is dry and but slightly austere with some young, grainy tannins but fine acidity. Cedar, pepper, earthy, vanilla, cola, black cherry, liquorice flavours fade into tobacco, leather, smoky herb, cardamom and eucalyptus notes on the finish. Good finesse but young and somewhat closed and hard on the palate currently. Needs three to five years to fully open out.Tasted: 04 February 2012Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
