Frog's Leap Zinfandel 2007

Rutherford, Napa Valley, California, United StatesBarely zinfandel aptly describes this delicious red that 'barely' meets the varietal definition at 76 per cent zinfandel, the remainder of the mix is 19 per cent petite sirah and 5 per cent carignane. The alcohol is abnormally and 'barely' above 13 per cent so the emphasis is on fruit and balance not power and alcohol. As they like to say it Frog's Leap, "you can't use this stuff to light your charcoal grill." The zin story is a field blend of co-fermented zinfandel, petite sirah and carignane never picked overripe or raisined. Expect that classic briary, fresh picked blackberry nose with a dash of spice. The palate is mix of cocoa powder, tobacco, black raspberries and blueberry fruit with earthy undertones. It's all dry farmed and organically grown, offering a pureness of taste you seldom see in modern zinfandel. Elegant and food friendly.Tasted: 19 December 2009Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
