Frog's Leap Merlot 2005

Rutherford, Napa Valley, California, United StatesWinemaker John Williams likes to say hard to know, hard to makes and harder to sell but he knows when merlot is at its best it can often be great. The '05 does not disappoint. Love the fragrant earthy nose spiked with cocoa powder and red fruits. The best merlot in my estimation sits on clay and at FL the site around the Red Barn sits over rich clay loam soils. The cool feet warm body dry-farmed vines is the story behind this delicious balanced and very un-Napa-like restrained merlot. Surprisingly pure and correct it has a suppleness and texture that can only be enjoyed it in the mouth. Excellent quality and only 13.5 per cent alcohol.Tasted: 19 December 2009Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
