Chester-Kidder Red Blend 2006
Columbia Valley, Washington, United StatesThe Long Shadows "home" winemaker is Gilles Nicault, well-trained for years by Rick Small at Woodward Canyon. When Nicault is not balancing the wants, needs and egos of the LS visiting winemakers, he is charged with making owner Allen Shoup's wine Chester Kidder. Look for a rich smoky savoury nose, reminiscent of Bolgheri, with spicy berry notes and bits of mocha beans. The mid-palate is classier, the tannins softer and the fruit flavours more exposed - a little Randy Dunn, a little Michel Rolland and a lot of black berry jam, cassis and vanilla. The fruit is sourced from major vineyard tour of Washington hot spots.Prices:BC | $90.00 | 750ml |

Boutari Vin Santo 2004
Aegean Islands - Santorini, The Islands, GreeceA long story and history here but according to the Greeks: sweet wines from Santorini made from sun-dried grapes are commonly called Vinsanto or Vissanto. The wines pre-date the Italian version labelled Vin Santo and have been made in Santorini since Byzantine times. The name Vin Santo does not mean "holy wine", but rather Vino di Santorini (wine from Santorini). Made mostly from partially sun dried assyrtiko grapes. Deep brick-amber colour with a green edge. Very lifted, spicy, dried peach, floral, rancio, nutty, citrus aromas. Rich, round and moderately sweet at 18% residual but very fresh acidity. Somewhat tannic with big dried apricot, pear, nutty, lemon, spicy, floral, nectarine, rancio flavours. Very unique and pretty brisk, can age further and will shed the astringency. Try with fruit tart or a pear torte. Only 12% alcohol.Prices:BC | $25.00 | 500ml |

No such danger stems from drinking this fabulous botrytised oranienstenier whose vines are 26 years old. Black Hills Nota Bene 2007
Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe latest Nota Bene is a 46/39/19 blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and cabernet franc. Production is supposedly maxed out at 4300 cases mostly sold direct $50: that's a 2.7 million cash cow. Ah but what about the wine you say. Well, it's softer and the tannins are richer and finer grained than ever. At 14.7 per cent alcohol the finish is warmer and smoother than ever. The challenge is the herbaceous peppery green olive, savoury resiny cigarette ash nose and leafy dried, tomato flavours. A dash of pure black fruit would be welcomed but with so much cabernet to ripen in the blend it is unlikely the style will change. Given its annual sell-out and price hikes it doesn't seem to matter to its many fans.Prices:BC | $53.00 | 750ml |
