Espelt Sauló Garnacha Carinena 2006
Empordà, Ampurdain-Costa Brava, Catalunya (Catalonia Cataluña), SpainThe Sauló (the name of the region's decomposed granite) is a blend of garnacha and cariñena and like last year the '06 over delivers for the price. The nose is a mix of fresh mineral floral notes with bits of animal. The entry is fresh with fragrant raspberry fruit and earthy notes to keep it vibrant and dry. Great energy and vitality makes this a fine everyday red for the savvy sipper. Grilled anything will work here. Great value. Close to the French border and the Mediterranean, the area was a favourite of Salvador Dali and seems a perfect fit for this modern Catalan winery.Prices:BC | $15.00 | 750ml |

Espelt Lledoner Rosat 2007
Empordà, Ampurdain-Costa Brava, Catalunya (Catalonia Cataluña), SpainThere's something about Spain and rosé as exemplified by this tasty treat. Lledoner is the local Empordà expression for garnacha. The colour is light pink, the technique used to create a fresh colourful rosé is saignée or bleeding the juice off the skins. The result is a fresh, fun, sipping pink with a bit of weight and sweetness. Look for bits of spice and sweet red fruits all with a twang of natural acidity. Think tapas.Prices:BC | $15.00 | 750ml |

It's super soft and slippery thanks to four sorting of the grapes and about 70 per cent of those are basket pressed. Casa Silva Los Lingues Gran Reserva Carmenère 2006
Valle del Colchagua, Valle del Rapel, Region del Valle Central, ChileCasa Silva impressed me with its 05 Los Lingues Gran Reserva but the '06 may be even better. The carmenère specialist has released a perfectly ripe version of this difficult to ripen variety. Some 60 per cent of the blend is fermented in one-year old oak (that periodically gets rolled over) for seven months. This gives the wine a slippery sheen, flecked with vanilla and chocolate and plenty of dense, ripe black fruit. The finish has touch of mint and compost. Very fine. Prices:AB | $22.00 | 750ml |
