Santa Rita Pehuén Carmenère 2004

Apalta Valley, Santa Cruz, Valle del Colchagua, Valle del Rapel, Region del Valle Central, ChilePehuén is new "super carmenère" from Santa Rita made by long time winemaker Andrés Ilabaca from 60+ year old vines. The 95/5 split of carmenère and cabernet mirrors its origin Apalta, Colchagua / Alto Jahuel, Maipo Valley. The name derives from the Mapuche name for the local Araucaria Araucana tree (or Monkey Puzzle tree variety). It spends 20 months in new American and French oak barrels and another 12 months in bottle before release. Look for rich earthy, tobacco leaf and chocolate espresso aromas flecked with black olive, pepper and minty. The palate is round and supple, almost sweet with plenty of fine grained tannins. On the palate it's full of smoky, coffee, cassis, black olive fruit with spicy, chocolate/mocha flavours. A suave if oaky style of what is a well-made carmenère.Tasted: 22 September 2007Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
