Champagne Gosset Grand Rosé Brut NV
Champagne, FranceFounded in Aÿ in 1584 by Pierre Gosset, Champagne Gosset is the oldest wine house in Champagne. For 17 generations, Gosset was family-owned, but in 1993 it was sold to the Cointreau family from Charente, owners of Frappin Cognac. This Grand Rosé is 55% chardonnay, 37% pinot noir (8% still pinot coming from Bouzy, Ambonnay, Cumières). The 2016 base is sourced from the GC and 1er Crus of Avize, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Cuis, Pierry, and Rilly. Wines were fermented in stainless, with no MLF, and this cuvée included 5% reserve wines. My bottle was disgorged early 2023 with 8 g/L. Pouring a peach salmon hue, this streams light cherry, meringue, red apple, with a light tannic grip pinning all in place. Tight and sleek, with white cherry, red apple, subtle raspberry, and buzzy lemon pith streaming down the palate, finishing with a chalk / lemon twist. Champagne Gosset Grand Rosé Brut NV
Champagne, FranceGosset, located in the tiny Grand Cru village of Aÿ, is the oldest known Champagne producer, with origins back to 1584. The current production remains small by Champagne standards, at less than 1.5 million bottles. The rosé is made with a mix of fruit from Avize, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Cuis, Pierry, and Rilly, usually spending three to five years in the cellars before it is disgorged as a Brut at 8g/L. The blend is around 50 percent chardonnay, 50 percent pinot noir, where 8 percent of the pinot noir is added as still wine for colour. Finally, 10-20 percent is 6-8 years of reserve wine, although the latest bottling has little included reserve wine. This half bottle has a medium red colour followed by sweet strawberry aromas with a touch of oxidation. The attack is rich and relatively full flavoured with orange, raspberries, and light spice before a mostly dry finish. Champagne, FranceThe Grand Rosé is a 56/35/9 mix of chardonnay, pinot noir and Bouzy and Ambonnay still red wines (9 percent) plus an average of 25 percent of reserve wines to add depth and complexity. The balance sets the stage to highlight the fresh creamy fruits reminiscent of persimmons, strawberries and raspberries with just a dusting of spice. The classic match is foie gras. Gosset, located in the minuscule Grand Cru village of Aÿ, is the oldest known Champagne producer, with origins back to 1584. Since 1994 the Frapin Cognac house has owned Gosset with Jean Pierre Cointreau running both companies. Current production is small at less than 1.4 million bottles.
