Napa Valley, California, United StatesAtalon appears to be blossoming under winemaker Tom Peffer whose Beringer Howell Mountain work history is proving useful at Atalon. Look for firm, dry earthy notes in the '02 merlot that give way to spicy, earthy, black fruit aromas. Rich and stylish on the palate with super plush textures and a rich fruity fat Napa undercarriage. Its smooth, round tannins dissipate into its warm, spicy mocha, cherry, clove, flavours. The structure is serious for merlot and despite some tantalizing fat supple characters it will require another three to five years to really begin to deliver to its full potential.
