Allegrini Villa Giona 2001

Verona, Veneto, ItalyMade from ultra high density plantings (9,000 vines per hectare) planted in 1996 Villa Giona blends 50/40/10 cabernet sauvignon / merlot / syrah in new French oak for 18 months. It opens a bit Pauillac-like with its spicy, cassis, cigar, and cedar aromas and then fades into licorice, coffee, caraway and black cherry with just a hint of barnyard. Rich smooth, round and slightly tannic, it has a peppery, black olive, black cherry, cassis flavour with a touch of green bean, coffee and vanilla on the finish. A bit nervy, it's Ita;lian afterall, but with fine fruit superb balance and best of all elegance. Needs another 2-4 years in bottle or decant now for up to an hour to reveal the depth. Well done.Tasted: 22 April 2005Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
