Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2001

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceBeaucastel boasts a large percentage of mourvèdre and grenache, about 30% each with 10 per cent syrah and another five per cent of muscardin, vaccarese and cinsault. The remainder is made up of small quantities of the seven other varieties permitted in Châteauneuf du Pape. Somewhat surprising nose of raspberry kirsch and spicy, pruny cooked fruit laced with chocolate, pepper and gamey notes. Quite peppery, spicy on the palate with black raspberry jam, cocoa, kirsch and prune flavours. Good intensity but quite alcoholic and somewhat over ripe. A big year and a big over the top red. Could be a faulty cork behind the cooked flavours.Prices:

Burrowing Owl Meritage 2001

Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe BOV Meritage is a 40/40/20 blend of cabernet franc/merlot and cabernet sauvignon. The colour is a deep cherry red. The nose: peppery, black olive, smoky, earthy, licorice with a streak of green bean, cassis and cherry. In the mouth the wine is rich and concentrated with a touch of acidity and heat. Cassis, black cherry, vanilla, orange peel and smoky resiny flavours all combine to seduce the palate as does a Christmas pudding, green olive and cassis aftertaste. This is well done considering the so-so vintage and it will improve over the next two to four years.Prices:

Burrowing Owl Merlot 2002

Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaGood dark cherry colour. Still a baby the '02 merlot shows fine promise from its peppery, spicy, Christmas pudding and plum/iodine nose with black raspberry, earthy, tobacco leaf undercurrent to its ripe plum jam, cherry, chocolate, vanilla, peppery orange rind flavours. Rich round and quite concentrated with ripe, supple tannins. A bit fat and alcoholic for B.C. but it will have wide appeal. Should improve over the next two to four years. Dare we say St. Emilion...Prices:

Penfolds Grandfather Fine Old Liqueur Tawny Port NV

Today Grandfather Fine Old Liqueur Tawny a blend of shiraz and mataro is stored Solera style in French and American hogsheads. As wine is drawn off from the bottom row of barrels, they are topped with wine from the barrels immediately above, and so on up the stack. The uppermost barrels are topped with selected aged wine. The system protects the quality and style of 'Grandfather' ensuring that the average age of the wine in the bottom barrels is as old as possible. The colour is a mix of walnut brown with green edges. Open citrus rind, buttery, rancio, spicy, caramel, vanilla, raisin notes mark the nose. It has a rich, sweet, supple style with good acidity and intense sweet orange peel flavours spiked with marmalade, spice, vanilla, crème brûlée and nutty walnut overtones.
