Rosemount Balmoral Syrah 2000

McLaren Vale, South Australia, AustraliaThe Balmoral McLaren Vale Syrah take sits name from the Oatley family homestead, built in 1852. The wine was first produced in 1989 initially under the Show Reserve banner but in 1992 it was renamed Balmoral and has become Rosemount's top red wine. After fermentation it is racked off its skins and aged for two years, in a 60/40 blend of new French and American oak. Its inky purple colour is almost impenetrable. An initial hit of pepper and spice gives way to a rich cassis and licorice aroma well integrated with creamy American oak, black plum, licorice, smoke, gamey bacon and vanilla nose. Round, rich and slightly tannic with a bit of acidity. Lots of sweet vanilla, coffee, smoky bacon, black cherry and plum flavours with a warm, supple finish. Nice finesse if a bit short in the aftertaste. One of the better Balmoral syrahs we have tasted.Tasted: 18 April 2004Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
