Henschke Henry's Seven 2001

Barossa Valley, South Australia, AustraliaThis is the first release of this co-fermented blended wine. The mix is 70/25/5 shiraz/grenache/viognier all grown in the Barossa. The blend is a tribute Henry Evans who planted the first vineyard of seven acres at Keyneton in 1853. He quickly developed a reputation for producing the best wines in the southern colony. Following the death of Henry in 1868 his widow Sarah exercised her personal convictions by closing the winery and uprooting all the wine grapes. The nose is a gamey, meaty mix of licorice, black raspberry jam, peppery nose with some blueberry and smoky streaks. Round, dry and elegant with a touch of acidity and smooth tannins. Spicy, peppery, licorice, vanilla oak, gamey chocolate flavours and some plum jam, mineral aspects on the finish. Well balanced and priced.Tasted: 28 October 2003Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
