d'Arenberg Vintage Fortified Shiraz 2000
McLaren Vale, South Australia, AustraliaDark black cherry colour. Huge spicy, black pepper, blackberry jam, pruny, resiny, smoky jasmine nose. Big sweet, rich fiery entry with some defined tannins. Warm, full bodied with intense black cherry jam, vanilla and smoky licorice root flavours. Great fruit, very impressive, very Australian and well made. Will require a good five years ageing to evolve but could be a hit now with the cigar group. The first declared vintage of this wine was in 1928, and the winery has been sourcing Shiraz for the wine from those same old vines ever since. The grapes are fermented in the traditional d'Arenberg way - minimal processing/up to two weeks fermenting on skins in traditional headed down open fermenters/foot treading/basket pressing through the 19th century 'Coq' and "Bromley & Tregoning' presses. After basket pressing, a small amount of fine, fortifying brandy spirit is added. The Vintage Port is bottled in the same year of vintage. d'Arenberg fortified wine is made from a single vintage, and does not spend any time in wood and receives only a cursory filtration before bottling.Tasted: 21 August 2003Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:BC | $39.99 | 750ml | Liberty Wine Merchants |
