d'Arenberg Shiraz Grenache d'Arry's Original 2000

McLaren Vale, South Australia, Australiad'Arry's Original - called d'Arry's Burgundy in the 60s, 70s and 80s (or in the days when medium-bodied red wines with a soft finish were always called Burgundy) has always been made from shiraz and grenache, the backbone varieties of McLaren Vale, grown on d'Arenberg's low-yielding, 19th century vineyards. The nose is highly aromatic with black cherry jam, earthy licorice root, pencil lead, floral, plum jam aromas and a touch of gamey mineral notes. It is rich and round with soft tannins yet there's a meaty, full-bodied elegance in the finish. Lots of plum jam, black cherry, licorice, orange spice, pepper flavours. Very impressive with a fruity, berry jam, mocha finish. Lovely and long. The wine is named in honour of d'Arenberg's principal, Francis d'Arenberg Osborn, universally known as d'Arry.Tasted: 21 August 2003Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
