d'Arenberg Grenache The Custodian 1999

McLaren Vale, South Australia, AustraliaAt d'Arenberg the vagaries of fashion have had little effect on their love for grenache and now the oldest Grenache vines at d'Arenberg are approaching 120 years of age. Thick trunked, dry farmed and deep rooted they struggle to produce modest quantities of small, highly flavoured grapes. The family sees itself as the custodian of Grenache hence the vinified and separately bottled: The Custodian. Spicy, brooding meaty, gamey style red with licorice root, smoky prune, leather and dark fruit flavours with a touch of raspberry jam. Round, rich, elegant style with savoury, spicy, raspberry jam, Christmas pudding flavours and a smoky licorice leather finish. Fine intensity, complexity and length if a touch warm.Tasted: 21 August 2003Tasted by: Anthony Gismondi and Stuart TobePrices:
