Domaine de la Bastide 1999
Corbières, Languedoc, Sud de France, FranceYou don't get much for $8.95 these days which makes the Bastide Vins de Pays d'Hauterive Rouge an interesting proposition for the barbecue. Exell's take on the inexpensive red: "a culmination of constant experimentation and increasingly intensive vineyard management." All of which allows La Bastide to produce a modern style wine from a vast storehouse of old-vine Carignan. The blend contains an ever-changing mix of grenache, cinsault and even merlot to add complexity and as Exell says, "reigns in the candied-berry notes of the carbonic (whole fruit) maceration of the carignan grapes." Look for barnyard, black cherry and burnt earth aromas as well as a round, leathery and pepper flavoured finish. It has quite kick for a little country wine. Bring on the cassoulet.Tasted: 01 March 2002Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:BC | $8.95 | 750ml |
