Domaine de la Bastide 1999

Corbières, Languedoc, Sud de France, FranceYou don't get much for $8.95 these days which makes the Bastide Vins de Pays d'Hauterive Rouge an interesting proposition for the barbecue. Exell's take on the inexpensive red: "a culmination of constant experimentation and increasingly intensive vineyard management." All of which allows La Bastide to produce a modern style wine from a vast storehouse of old-vine Carignan. The blend contains an ever-changing mix of grenache, cinsault and even merlot to add complexity and as Exell says, "reigns in the candied-berry notes of the carbonic (whole fruit) maceration of the carignan grapes." Look for barnyard, black cherry and burnt earth aromas as well as a round, leathery and pepper flavoured finish. It has quite kick for a little country wine. Bring on the cassoulet.Prices:

Rosemount Shiraz 1999

South Australia, AustraliaRosemount's flagship red varietal is primarily grown in the South Australian regions of Langhorne Creek and McLaren Vale with a small proportion of fruit coming from Mudgee in New South Wales. The wine is fermented in several parcels, which allows for flexibility in fermentation methods. Some grapes are worked in old, open vats where the cap of grapes is plunged down by hand producing a forward, softer, plummy style red while others are vinified in red wine fermenters where the juice is pumped over the cap regularly to extract colour, structure and flavour. The 1999 Rosemount shiraz is back on track. The nose is open and inviting mixing vanilla /coconut oak and spicy dark berry fruit. The mid-palate is soft, with generous, round tannins. After years of growing demand it looks as if the supply has finally caught up with demand and perhaps quality with price. Soft, round and easy to drink.302349 Prices:

The vines destined for the Alta Malbec undergo detailed thinning aimed at leaving only select, isolated clusters. The new wine is aged for 13 months in 100% new French oak and you pick up the toasted oak notes as soon as you put your nose in the glass. Expect a mass of ripe blackberry fruit with sweet vanilla notes in the background. Its soft, round, melt in your mouth tannins will have wide appeal. Big spicy, peppery, garrigue, sweaty barnyard, blackberry and game aromas. It's still dry and tight with some rough tannins to drop. Look for spicy, earthy, vanilla, blackberry leather and game flavours. Big and structured but a bit unripe in the tannins and showing more cabernet than shiraz. Riscal Tempranillo 1999

Castilla-Leon, SpainThe newest label at Marqués de Riscal once again takes the winery down a new path outside the Rioja region. This time the grape is tempranillo, the traditional Riojan red but it comes from selected vineyards within the vast Castilla y León region. Look for a dark red colour with a bright, fresh, jammy fruit nose reminiscent of cherries and raspberries. Smoky toasted notes (it spends five months in American oak) highlight a well-structured red that has ample acidity and weight. A classy barbecue red.Prices:
