Brotte Chateauneuf-du-Pape Domaine Barville 2017

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhone, Rhone Valley, FranceDomaine Barville is the ancestral name of Laurent Brotte's family estate in Barville. The 15 hectare, southwest facing site is split into seven parcels that sit on two of the best parts of the appellation: clay and pebbles at Pradel; and shattered limestone at Beaurenard. This blends grenache, syrah, and mouvèdre, fermented over 3 weeks' maceration, with the syrah and mourvèdre spending a year in equal parts new French oak, 1 and 2 year old barrels. The grenache is aged in concrete and 100 year old oak vats, prior to the final blend. Inky black and red fruit swirl on the full, chewy, oxidative-edged palate, sharpened (a bit too much) with a tart currant acidity, and shaped by furry, sticky tannins. Needs a hearty lamb/veg stew to merge this together.Tasted: 11 November 2022Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
