Bachelder Grimsby Hillside Red-Clay Barn Block Chardonnay 2020

Lincoln Lakeshore, Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, CanadaThe Red-Clay Barn Block is adjacent to a red brick barn and sits on bright red clayey soils, which may explain a slightly fatter base than the Grimsby Frontier. This lends this wine a somewhat more straightforward style, making it more receptive at this point to drink. A comforting swath of honey and peaches greet you upfront before the acidity and stony mineral notes kick in to balance the picture at the finish. It remains a contemplative wine and a chardonnay for fans which is okay with me. It sits on washed-down Escarpment rubble, giving it a Bench persona. Then there is the 4.6-billion-year-old meteorite that hit Grimsby Hillside in 2009 that Bachelder surmises likely left the farm with fragments of soil much older than anywhere in Niagara. We need more of this in Canadian wine.Tasted: 29 November 2022Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
