Phantom Creek Estates Chardonnay 2020
Osoyoos, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThis is a significant improvement over last year with the same fruit that comes off the historic Becker Vineyard on the Black Sage Bench, initially developed in 1977 as part of the pioneering Becker Project looking at which Vitis vinifera could thrive in British Columbia. While most of the property eventually went red, a small amount of chardonnay is made exclusively for the wine club. This year, while still intense and even rich, the style is tighter and more linear, a sort of California meets cool climate. The ferment is indigenous and this gets plenty of lees contact with ten months in oak barriques and casks. Look for a bright mix of green apples and lemons with a touch of sweet pineapple in the finish. Delicious drinking now and should hold through 2024.
