Koerner Mammolo Sciacarello 2021

Clare Valley, South Australia, AustraliaBrothers Damon and Jono Koerner show classic and alternative Clare varieties through a variety of winemaking vessels and styles, all from estate fruit, and all with low intervention. Sciacarello is an Italian red variety that is grown primarily in Corsica, known for its haunting floral perfume. From Watervale's organic Vivian Vineyard, planted in 1998 on black and red clay over limestone, this light red preserves the grape's alluring nature. This was destemmed with 50% whole berry (no whole bunch) before native ferment in steel with twice daily pigeage for two weeks. This then ages in Slavonian oak foudre for 6 months, then back into steel for 3 months of tightening prior to bottling without fining or filtration. Such a charmer, with wild strawberries, tayberries, wild flowers, peonies, wax, cracked mustard seed filling the slight frame, scented with pink peppercorns, tart with rhubarb acidity, and layered with mineral salts over a finely buzzy base. Tannins are lengthy and whisper fine, taking this finessed lighter red to a haunting, saline laced finish. Take with a light chill. This 2021 is dedicated to wee Charlie Jack Koerner, born 21.05.21.Tasted: 13 October 2022Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
