Gérard Bertrand L'Hospitalitas 2019

La Clape, Coteaux du Languedoc, Languedoc, Sud de France, FranceThe L'Hospitalet sits on the coast's edge, overhanging the Mediterranean sea, providing protection from the hottest days and nights and leaving the wine with adequate acidity keeping it fresh and vibrant. It's rich in fossils, marls, and chalky soil, and location at the foot of the cliff holds a steady supply of water to keep the vines happy in summer. In contrast, the red Mediterranean soil over bluish-grey compact limestone contributes a rich, concentrated character to the vines. The syrah and mourvèdre blend comes with plenty of aromatics and embraces the oak without being overwhelmed. Look for violets, blackberries, and cherry jam laced with garrigue which keeps it interesting. The finish is cracked black pepper with dense sweet tannins, requiring five years to dissipate, so cellar this through 2024. If you must drink, a leg of lamb is the best bet now. In the Middle Ages, l'Hospitalitas was a place of refuge for pilgrims, protected from fierce winds and the punishing summer sun by a high cliff.Tasted: 01 October 2022Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
