Rigour & Whimsy Thus Spoke Veruca 2020
Osoyoos, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaRigour & Whimsy are a tiny garagiste, family-owned winery based in Okanagan Falls, sourcing special vineyards across the Okanagan for their creative and adventuresome (and artfully labelled) portfolio, one that changes annually. This new wine blends 85% syrah and 15% viognier from an Oliver vineyard, cofermented. This new wine, a sibling of their familiar Multiverse, was whole cluster fermented and macerated over 1 month, with 9 months' barrel aging. The whole cluster is apparent from first herbal whiff, with alluring white pepper and pitchy sapid notes carrying into the medium bodied (13%) palate, where silken plum and boysenberry meet up with fragrant violets, sweet fennel salami, and flake salts. Really lovely, gentle, pretty example of Syrah, and one that takes me to cool climate Oz rather than Southern Okanagan.
