Moon Curser Dead of the Night 2020
Osoyoos, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaIf you need a recipe for a giant red wine, the Moon Curser flagship Dead of the Night is it. The blend is 51/49 East Osoyoos Bench tannat/syrah, which is about as hefty as it gets in the red wine business. 2020 was a spectacular year in the south Okanagan, described at Moon Curser as a year to remember for many reasons: "the quality of the grapes harvested, the fantastic flavour development and the balanced accumulation of sugars and acidity." It's dense and dark with a strong licorice undercurrent that almost smothers the blueberry, dark plum, and peppery fruit. The tannins are healthy and youthful and will require at least five years of bottle age to be totally resolved. The alcohol seems better managed this year, so it will be interesting to see how this develops down the road. For now, only the richest beef dishes will be able to take it on. I'm thinking of a roast leg of lamb.
