Yalumba Viognier The Virgilius Eden Valley 2018

Eden Valley, South Australia, AustraliaThe Virgilius is the top viognier and the flagship white wine at Yalumba. The cuvée is certainly important for this iconic Australian winery, credited with saving this near-extinct southern French grape a few decades ago. Part of this Eden Valley blend comes off old 1980-planted vines, with the balance from a neighbouring vineyard, planted to the same clone in 1995. This was handpicked and native fermented in older French barriques, puncheons, and demi-muids, where it remained on lees for 10 months. Powerful and toward, with smouldering apricot, fragrant jasmine, ripe white peach, wild herbs, stretched across a waxy, smoked stone basin. There's a flicker of reduction, adding an alluring twist. The finish lingers long with gingersnap and white pepper spicing. This is certainly the most grown up and serious of Yalumba's impressive viognier portfolio, and a contemplative wine to take now, or lay down for a few years in the cellarTasted: 05 May 2022Tasted by: Prices:
