Donkey & Goat The Gallivanter 2018

California, United StatesThis true gallivanter is a merlot based blend, backed up by grenache, syrah, mourvèdre, and from vineyards across cool climate California. All their partner growers are farming sustainably, organically, or biodynamically and it's up to owners / winemakers Jared and Tracey Brandt to make the adventuresome blend, which varies wildly each year. Each variety was native fermented, with no inputs or outtakes, and aged in older oak before the final blend, bottled unfined and unfiltered. In 2018, this natural red pours a cloudy hazy darker hue, teeming with dusky plum, thorny wild blackberry, smokey tobacco ash, balsamic, and cracked peppercorns across the textural, slight 11% palate. There's a prickle of spritz livening the chill palate, reminding me of natural Lambruscos. Quite adventuresome, and one to check out after a slight chill (to help quell the VA) with a plate of hearty charcuterie.Tasted: 04 May 2022Tasted by: Treve RingPrices:
