Red Barn at Jagged Rock Lost Art Semillon 2020

Oliver, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, CanadaThe red barn has been visible for decades on the Black Sage Bench, essentially a tasting room and an escape from the noon-day sun for the trade folks visiting Mission Hill vineyards. However, recent events have given it new life as the Red Barn Winery, the latest project of Anthony Von Mandl, owner of the Iconic Wineries of British Columbia. Red Barn is the seventh member of the group joining Mission Hill, Cedar Creek, CheckMate, Road 13, Liquidity, and Martin’s Lane. Visitors can expect to get a look at the intimate facility in 2022 when it opens to the public by appointment only. In the meantime, the wines are out, and the sémillon is a winner. Jagged Rock Vineyard has already yielded some impressive sémillon fruit seen in multiple Mission Hill labels, and the Red Barn version is equally impressive. The fruit is raised in a mix of stainless steel and concrete, blending freshness and luscious texture throughout. Round and dense, the palate is a refreshing mix of exotic lemon and yellow apple with a shake of sea salt. An impressive start, another example of why sémillon needs more love in BC. No rush to drink this wine that should easily slide in 2024 and beyond. About the label: artist Kathy Ager works in a Dutch Masters style, but then she puts her own modern spin on it. The result is this kind of Pop Art that welcomes new, fresh ideas.Tasted: 12 November 2021Tasted by: Anthony GismondiPrices:
