Hester Creek Syrah 2019

Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada2019 was a fine growing season in the Oliver and Osoyoos region, led by overall Growing Degree Days (GDD) of 1598, above the 20-year average of 1474, but with few heat spikes. A warm, wet September stole the crop from perfection. A severe widespread frost across Okanagan Valley abruptly ended the season on October 9. The fruit is a mix of handpicked syrah from the Golden Mile Bench and a longtime grower at Eagles Nest Vineyard on the Black Sage Bench. To lift the aromatics, the syrah was co-fermented with a small amount of viognier from the Star Vineyard in Osoyoos. The attack is full and ripe, more Barossa than Rhone, with spicy, floral, rich black cherry, blueberry flecked with bacon and smoke and a decadent dollop of oak. You can drink or hold this wine through 2024 and beyond. Lamb burgers sound just about right as a pairing. The wine was aged on fine lees for 12 months in 60% American and 40% French oak barrels following fermentation.Tasted: 18 September 2021Tasted by: Prices:
