Marcarini Barolo Brunate 2015

La Morra, Cuneo, Piedmont, ItalyThis magnificent Barolo is from one of the most renowned vineyards in the region, and from the excellent 2015 vintage. Bright crimson, the colour shows a young wine not yet bricking at the rim. The aromas are a roll call for nebbiolo’s essence: rose, raspberry, cherries, anise, tar and dusty earth. Inhale a little more and the pungency of undergrowth, menthol, beef tea and brandied cherries emerge. The very warm 2015 vintage shows in the first sips with ripe, lush red berried fruit, balancing acidity that’s bright but not searing, and tannins that are firm, but gorgeously plush. Powerful and structured, it’s just beginning to let you in, with accessible, exuberant fruit and mellowing complexity. Marcarini’s approach is staunchly traditionalist, and this Brunate sees a 4-week skin maceration and two years ageing in Slavonian oak. Brunate in the commune of La Morra is known for elegance, and Marcarini’s 2015 is classic and finessed. The finish is lengthy and profoundly minerally. Of course you could age for another 15+ years or give it an hour to breathe and pair with a deserving dish like osso bucco or mature cheese.Tasted: 18 January 2021Tasted by: DJ KearneyPrices:
